The Last Meal of a Former Meat Eater

Serial killer Ted Bundy declined a 'special meal', so he was given a 'traditional' - steak (medium rare), eggs (over easy), hash browns, toast with butter and jelly, milk and juice

You know how inmates on death row often receive a last meal before execution? First of all, why the hell do they deserve a final meal? Why should our money go towards their bucket of KFC chicken? Did the person they killed get a free and elaborate final meal before they died? Probably not. You could debate the pros and cons of final meals and the death penalty for years but the concept of a final meal is still pretty fascinating to consider. Last September, Texas famously ended the custom of a final meal for inmates after one man took the offer to an extreme. Here’s what he requested for his last meal on earth:

  • two chicken fried steaks smothered in gravy with sliced onions
  • one triple-meat bacon cheeseburger
  • one cheese omelet
  • a large bowl of fried okra with ketchup
  • three fajitas
  • one pint of Blue Bell ice cream
  • one pound of barbecue with a half-loaf of white bread
  • a slab of peanut butter fudge with crushed peanuts
  • one pizza
  • three root beers

The inmate refused to eat his meal. Rather than carrying on about what an ass this guy is, let’s consider how our own list of favorite foods changes as we change. At the age of 15 when I was still a meat eater, what would I have requested for a last meal?

  • cucumber and cheese sandwich, made by my mom
  • ham and mustard-mayonnaise sandwich from Mark’s and Spencer
  • Wendy’s five piece chicken nuggets
  • Arby’s regular roast beef sandwich
  • Steak ‘n Shake steak burger with ketchup
  • chicken fingers from pretty much anywhere and everywhere
  • Kraft mac ‘n cheese
  • brownies
  • cookie dough ice cream
  • Subway cold cut trio with provolone and mayonnaise
  • Lay’s sour cream and onion chips

I think my list just surpassed the Texas inmate’s list. Whoops. I didn’t realize how much I liked mayonnaise. I also don’t have a single true vegetable or fruit on the list… besides cucumber… and potato chips if that even counts! Now I almost never crave any of the above foods although I still catch myself mixing mustard and vegenaise together on sandwiches. Oh, well. Let’s see what I would have on that list today, roughly 10 years later.

  • avocado and tomato salad with balsamic dressing
  • Chipotle burrito bowl with black beans, fajita mix, corn, pico de gallo, lettuce and guacamole (my favorite ever)
  • The Owlery’s vegan BLT with avocado
  • pad broccoli with tofu
  • taco the town from Real Food Daily
  • pasta marinara with fresh basil

Ahh how I’ve grown to love veggies. What would be on your list?

  1. Great idea for a post! Hmm, I think I’d ask for Herbivore’s lemon-herbed “chikn” sandwich, sweet potato fries with sweet chili sauce, a huge vegan sushi roll, a bowl of vegetarian pho, deep fried spring rolls, sweet plantains, Thai fried rice, bruschetta with balsamic reduction, and the hugest most decadent chocolate peanut butter fudge bar I could find. : )
